In the summer 2020, we (the authors) engaged with high school scholars in Chicago in naming and developing primary sources documenting their own truth in navigating the COVID19 global pandemic and the disruption of normative forms of schooling. Building on the work of Audre Lorde, the scholars and community scholars (educators/teachers) evaded, succumbed, dealt with and transcended our collective pain as we engaged one another’s life stories. This chapter is an attempt to share our story with the aim to engage educators and scholars to consider how ideological frameworks that center Black women can help us make meaning and as Lorde reminds us, transcend pain.
