Critical Use of Research: A Network Analysis of Knowledge Brokers in DACA Policy Discourse

Abstract

We examine amici’s use of research evidence in the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2020 DACA case, building an empirical and theoretical understanding of critical research use in policy discourse. Through a multi-network analysis of amici’s use of research in DACA policy discourse, preliminary analyses show that knowledge brokers(amici) either do not use research evidence or use non-critical research evidence to develop arguments surrounding the rescission of the DACA immigration policy. This study presents implications for critically oriented research, policy, and practice, including the work of knowledge brokers and producers and the need to address patterns of exclusion.
