Measurement Invariance of Divergent Thinking Assessments Cross-Culturally (Poster 22)

Abstract

Creativity research in the cross-cultural context is emerging; however, studies that have addressed the measurement invariance (MI) of creativity assessments cross-culturally are rare. The present study investigated the latent structure and the degree of measurement invariance of four divergent thinking (DT) tests (Line Meanings, Uses, Instances, and Consequences) between American (n = 341) and Chinese (n= 345) colleges students. Multi-group CFA supported configural, metric and scalar MI based on a two-factor model with certain items from Uses and Instances removed. Latent mean comparisons demonstrated higher performance of American respondents on DT compared to Chinese peers. Overall, the findings of the study demonstrate the importance of examining invariance of the instruments before interpreting cross-cultural differences in creativity-related constructs.
