Abstract

The study explores the composition and attributes of social support for Black tenure-track faculty women. Previous scholarship suggests that Black women may find their best support in one another. However, research that explores the frequency and demographics of personal and professional support for Black women faculty is understudied. Utilizing critical social capital and Black feminist theoretical approaches to conceptualize social support, we examined: Who are Black women’s primary forms of professional and personal network support? Findings from (n=90) survey responses suggest homophily among Black women support by race and gender, as well as larger support networks than expected when compared to random graphs.
