In this paper, we unfold our decision-making processes and the complexities, ethics, and politics involved in turning data into writing without adhering to the conventional steps expected of qualitative researchers. As scholars trained in qualitative methodologies, we approach this paper as a type of “un-how to guide” on engaging with qualitative data in creative and non-traditional manners and how to navigate the process of turning ‘data’ into writing. Through drawing on our individual ethnographic work with trans and gender nonconforming youth, we consider the importance of developing alternative analytical processes for engaging with data. This conversation is an opening for others to query why data analysis remains a challenging phase of research to critically question and rethink.
