Co-Constructing Equity-Based Assessment Practices in Montessori

Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

Montessori as a learner-centered educational practice and human development theory can be an effective method for implementing equity-based assessment practice (EBAP) with adult learners by using transparent expectations, learner pacing, learner participation and choice. EBAP can be used in Montessori adult education so that teachers experience the humanistic/liberatory potential when authentic assessment contributes to the personal learning journey in a communal context. Current perspectives and broad theoretical literature are examined; a Montessori case study is provided as a contextualized mode of inquiry. Survey data and a Montessori instructor discussion group will provide insight into experience and interest in EBAP for Montessori adult learners. We conclude with the scholarly significance of this work and implications for further action and research.
