Abstract

This paper works to understand the normative constraints around being both gay man and teacher to explore the tensions experienced by those who simultaneously embody both positions. To do so, it explores two seminal articles by Jonathan Silin and the late Eric Rofes, scholars who wrote individually about the challenges, tensions, and potential of simultaneously being both gay man and teacher. This paper will both analyze the important interventions these scholars wrote about over 20 years ago while also exploring how their work has been taken up by educational scholarship in the intervening years.
