Does Practice Make Perfect With Mixed Reality Simulations in Teacher Education?

Abstract

Like many professional fields, there are a variety of challenges in preparing preservice teachers for the realities of the public-school classroom. Recently, this difficulty has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and limited access to authentic placements. Given the challenges of finding quality field placements and the importance of scaffolded rehearsal opportunities, this session will share results from a mixed-method study that investigated the impact of an interactive, immersive mixed reality classroom simulation experience on preservice teachers’ self-efficacy related to teaching literacy and on their transfer of learning related to the high-leverage practice of eliciting and interpreting student thinking.
