Abstract

Self-regulated learning (SRL) research has blind spots regarding how SRL plays out in racially oppressive environments, which could impact conclusions about diverse students' educational experiences. Here, I evaluate an SRL behavior that emerges particularly among racially minoritized students: the Twice-As phenomenon. This refers to when someone must work twice as hard to get half as far, experienced by students of color compared in White spaces. I conducted focus groups, informing the development and validation of a future scale to identify students’ engagement in the Twice-As phenomenon. This will inform the use of this scale to explore how this phenomenon manifests in students' academic behavior, including demonstrating high SRL as well as burnout to ultimately to inform perceptions of their efforts.
