Abstract

It is critical to support diverse college students’ development and success in culturally responsive and equitable ways. Relatedly, scholars stress the importance of attending to students’ science identity due to its crucial role in promoting retention, success, and career pursuit in STEM. Some studies have indicated the role of mentorship in fostering college students’ science identity, but very little remains known about how culturally responsive mentorship impacts college students of color’s science identity development. This study aims to address this gap in the literature by examining the impact of an intergenerational mentorship program on STEM college students of color’s science identity through receiving culturally responsive mentoring from a science professional and providing culturally responsive mentoring to middle school students.
