Abstract

While models of teacher leadership often focus on aspects of classroom-based support, professional development, or coaching (York-Barr & Duke, 2004), focusing solely on these areas ignores a teacher leader’s potential for transforming the school system. In this paper, we describe a collaborative project between XXX University and four local school districts aimed at identifying and developing a team of teachers of color (TOCs) to serve as teacher leaders to address district policy and practices towards recruiting, hiring, inducting, and retaining more TOCs. We offer a conceptual framework for reimagining the work of teacher leaders to address the persistent and damaging dearth of TOCs for our nation's schools. This approach reframes teacher leadership to confront social and racial injustices in schools.
