Designing an Instructor Dashboard Using a Human-Centered Approach: An Illustrative Study

Abstract

Dashboards that provide automated feedback communicate visually classroom data that instructors cannot recall otherwise. Dashboards have been designed from a technical perspective rather than a pedagogical perspective. Researchers call for implementing human-centered approaches for designing dashboards, yet there has been limited research that documented the design processes. This study employs a human-centered approach to design the TEACHActive dashboard. TEACHActive dashboard is the front-end component of the system that is designed to provide instructors with visuals from multimodal classroom analytics in connection with their pedagogical practices. The design processes with illustrative prototypes are presented. Instructors’ perceptions of the most helpful and least helpful features are discussed.
