In recent years, developed and emerging countries have become increasingly concerned about the level of financial literacy of their citizens and, especially, of the younger population. However, there is still little evidence about on the factors that are most relevant to explaining financial literacy since the existing literature is inconclusive about this issue. This paper focuses on students' personal experiences in effective learning of financial knowledge outside of their schools. To do this, we exploit the rich set of comparative data about Spanish students participating in the PISA 2018 financial literacy assessment. Our results suggest that parental engagement in their children's financial socialization is found to be a very relevant factor in promoting students learning about financial issues.
