Minorities in Engineering: A Knowledgeable and Life-Changing Experience Through Research

Abstract

Minority undergraduate Engineering students face multiple challenges in college while trying to accomplish their college degree. Institutions of higher education, in particular, Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) must offer programs and services to improve minorities' college experiences, in particular Latinx students. At a borderland HSI, called Choya University, a research-focus program entitled Research-Oriented Learning Experiences (ROLE) was initiated to encourage minority students to explore research aspects in Electrical and Computer Engineering. This proposal offers an insight into the student and faculty experiences and learning outcomes of the first program cohort that took place in Spring 2022.
