Undergraduate Latinas Along the Teacher Education Pipeline

Abstract

This paper presents the educational/life experiences, familial/cultural/institutional supports, and aspirations of undergraduate Latinas along the teacher education pipeline at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in California. Interview and focus group data revealed that they 1) have a deep sense of commitment to the students and families that will be members of their future classrooms, 2) many chose to attend an HSI for their teacher preparation because of feelings of belonging, and 3) their K-12 teachers play an important role in their interest to become teachers. They provide critical insights to teacher preparation and retention as states across the country experiencing demographic shifts, seek to diversify their teaching forces to be more representative of K-12 students and fill teacher shortages.
