Investigating Teacher- and School-Level Factors Affecting Long-Term Teacher Retention and Attrition

Abstract

Using an interdisciplinary methodological approach by integrating time-to-event techniques often applied in medical research, this study examines the factors associated with teacher retention and attrition in Texas, with a focus on how such outcomes impact historically excluded groups. With the aim of helping policymakers and school leaders be better prepared to implement proactive strategies to mitigate teacher shortages, we closely investigate how teacher- and school-level factors affect long-term teacher retention and attrition rates. This study’s results will contribute to research on improving retention for teachers with implications for school leaders and policymakers seeking to improve student outcomes, especially from historically marginalized groups, by increasing teacher stability.
