Taking Stock: International Research on LGBTQ+ Histories of Education

• In Event: LGBTQ+ Histories of Education: Where in the World Do We Stand?

Abstract

The presenters discuss an ongoing collaborative project among education historians in North America, South America, and Europe to delineate the status of research on histories of LGBTQ+ education. The scope of the work encompasses studies based in Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Spain, the United States of America, and Uruguay. The aim of the project is to advance understanding of the roles that gender and sexual identities have played in educational institutions across time, and the ways that educators and their school communities have contributed to or opposed civil rights movements for LGBTQ+ people.

Topics include analysis of gender identity and sexuality regarding the curriculum and textbooks, LGBTQ+ student organizations in higher education, LGBTQ+ teachers, teacher training, memory and narrative, and culture wars. Most studies address the late-twentieth century; in addition, one study focuses on the early-twentieth century, and another focuses on the 1950s.

This presentation relies upon historiographical and other conceptual frameworks.
