In celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, we conducted a study where we interviewed eight prominent scholars and community-engaged activists who have contributed to the field of hip-hop and education. Our goal in interviewing these scholars and activists was to reflect on established research and activism within the field of hip-hop and education and to dream about the future of hip-hop and education radically. Findings reveal that a part of the future of hip-hop in education must include an interrogation of the commercialization and appropriation of hip-hop, a focus on liberating and supporting youth through a centering of youth perspectives, and a community-oriented approach to activism in the work.
