This study examined predictors of post-transfer adjustment for lateral and vertical transfers in a large, research intensive, public, land-grant four-year university located in Louisiana. We collected survey data from 561 transfer students and matched it with institutional transcript data. The exploratory factor analysis revealed three factors of post-transfer adjustment: academic adjustment, social adjustment, and institutional size. The independent t-test indicated that lateral transfers had significantly better academic adjustment than vertical transfers. However, with demographic and academic variables controlled, lateral transfers did not show any significant advantages in academic and social adjustment compared to vertical transfers. Results of the regression analyses further indicated significant predictors of post-transfer adjustment, including age, STEM major, transfer GPA, GPA at receiving university, and institutional size.
