The purpose of this paper is to discuss findings from an ongoing longitudinal evaluation of two teacher preparation programs located in an urban region in California. Specifically, we investigated the relationships between teacher residents and their mentors. Nationwide, school districts spend valuable resources to train incoming teachers to become effective, dedicated educators. Our work reflects utilization-focused and participatory/collaborative evaluation approaches. We used a mixed-methods approach to collect data from key stakeholders. As an ongoing study, this evaluation seeks to discover how teacher residents’ experiences with their mentors impacts their overall outlook on becoming teachers. This work contributes to research and practice in teacher preparation programs.
