AB 705 dismantled developmental education and required students to meet with a counselor before enrolling in courses, this study was guided by critical race theory and validation theory to examine the experiences 22 counselors at Hispanic serving California Community Colleges as they navigated the implementation of AB 705 during the pandemic. Participants engaged in asset-based perspectives of students that validated student abilities to navigate multiple oppressive systems as a strength. Counselors attributed their asset-based perspectives to various sources. Findings also highlight that although counselors engaged in critical consciousness when advising students, educational inequities rooted in institutional racism persisted as indicated by the lack of time that counselors had to guide students and the high caseloads of counselors.
