Abstract

As a philosophy, Black Existentialism concerns itself with Black embodiment and its relation to issues of freedom, anguish, responsibility, suffering, and liberation. In Black Existentialism, articulations of these concerns appear in literature, music, films, writings, plays, lyrics, and various other means that explore Black subjugation under White oppression. The purpose of this presentation is to convey innovative ways to understand, interrogate, analyze, and present the lived Black experience in the classroom. By defining and describing Black Existentialism, then highlighting ways that videos, images, music, and arts-based projects can be utilized to teach it, this presentation aims to both foreground the embodied experience of Blackness as well as equip educators with novel ways of teaching it.
