Countering Antiblackness and Afrophobia With African Diasporic Religious Literacies

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

Widely known for his poetry, it is less well known that Langston Hughes, in collaboration with Arna Bontemps, authored the first English-language children’s book about Haiti. This paper explores how transnational black identities, language, and temporal setting mediate portrayals of Haitian Vodou in two Anglophone works of children’s literature. Both works illustrate African diasporic religious literacies that counter anti-Blackness and Afrophobia.
