Community College English for Academic Purposes: A Mixed-Methods Study of the Student Experience

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Lobby - Level 3, Columbus AB

Abstract

For English Language Learners (ELLs), community colleges provide a pathway to academic English and degree attainment. How ELLs actually experience their English for Academic Purposes programs, however, is a rich and unexplored area for study. From placement and registration to developing relationships within the program, to completing EAP coursework and reflecting on their experiences, ELL voices play an integral role in informing the research and the EAP programs they have completed. This mixed-methods case study explores the experiences of this distinct population of community college students.
