Anti-Method as Critical-Method

Abstract

In this paper I examine what it means to be anti-method and consider the implications of the “anti” when animated by ethical force. That is, I refuse the default assumption that some lack of order necessarily implies a procedural relativism absent grounding. I engage in this argument in order to consider the “anti” stance as informing a critical orientation—one that generates alternative ways of inquiring and living with our contemporary moment. And, I do so by linking method as a form of procedural governance, the consequences of which are considered in the following sections. I offer practices of mapping, provoking, and confecting as important elements of an anti orientation within the field of qualitative inquiry.
