Abstract

‘Safe spaces’ in K-12 schools are inadequate for meeting the spirit and vision of diversity, equity, and inclusion for LGBTQ students. In this study, as part of a Professional Praxis Collaborative, teacher education faculty members learn about LGBTQ issues and queer perspectives, engage in cogenerative dialoguing practices, and co-create deliverables to transform pedagogies and coursework. We additionally utilized a critical reflection process to uncover and transform hidden and implicit, heteronormative hegemony. Through engagement in the PPC, participants developed depth and scope of LGBTQ issues in K-12 education and created specific LGBTQ-focused coursework to be implemented.
