This study reports on a literature review that identifies crucial aspects to consider for building a community of practice for mathematics teacher educators. For this purpose, twenty-two research articles were analyzed. We identify six fundamental elements that characterize the sustainable development of a community of practice for mathematics teacher educators. The first four have to do with characteristics of the interactions generated within the communities; the last two focus on structural features that would favor interactions between the participants and the design of the virtual environment. Finally, discuss several challenges for building a community of practice addressing specific disciplinary needs of mathematics teacher educators.
