The Role of Community Colleges in the Career Preparation of Latino/x Men

Abstract

The workforce demand for increased skills and postsecondary education is at an all-time high, particularly for men of color. This multi-site case study seeks to understand the asset-based factors that contribute to the way Latinx/o men prepare for their future careers while enrolled in Texas community colleges. Utilizing Rendon’s (1994) validation theory and ganas as praxis (Mireles-Rios et al., 2021), we consider institutional practices that foster validation and ganas to empower Latinx/o men and their success in community college. We share preliminary findings from interviews conducted with Latinx/o men who drew on cultural wealth, familia, and strong cultural networks to persist and succeed academically. Our practice-based findings will be shared with member, and other, institutions to continue serving Latinx/o students.
