Problem-Based Learning in Confucian Heritage Culture Countries: The Impact of Westernization

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of Westernization on students’ learning experiences with PBL and tutor perceptions of PBL in Confucian Heritage Culture (CHC) countries. Previous research indicated that Confucian values in Asia are incompatible with PBL, a Western pedagogy. We hypothesized that the impact of Confucian values is mediated by the degree of Westernization in CHC countries; more specifically, a more Westernized cultural climate leads to a more favorable environment to implement PBL. Several universities in CHC countries were surveyed, which asked both students about their PBL experiences and tutors about their PBL perceptions. Results showed that Westernized CHC tutors reported more positive perceptions of PBL. However, Westernized CHC students reported more negative learning experiences with PBL.
