Embedding Values in Higher Education Technology: Creating a Discussion Tool With Values Sensitive Design

Abstract

When designing educational technology platforms, understanding the values of the stakeholders who will use the platform is critical. However, identifying this information early within a project lifecycle can be difficult. In this research study, we explore the use of the Values Sensitive Design (VSD) framework to collect and synthesize the values of a diverse group of stakeholders. We used value coding to analyze the user stories generated through focus groups and community input. Our research identified nine common values shared by participants: 1) efficiency, 2) authority, 3) community, 4) acknowledgement, 5) privacy, 6) self-efficacy, 7) transparency, 8) safety, and 9) accessibility. We conclude with recommendations for how to incorporate VSD analysis in the educational technology development process.
