Preparation Citizen: Interrogating the Civic Outcomes of Charter Schools

Abstract

The proposed paper seeks to interrogate and expand research on short term civic outcomes of charter schools. Utilizing nationally representative data from the NAEP Civics assessments for 2006, 2010, and 2014, we examined the trends in the average national civic achievement scores to gauge the prevalence of significant differences between charters, traditional public schools, and private schools and whether exposure to civics curriculum and instruction is associated with higher civics results. Findings indicate the short-term civic outcomes associated with charters is not significantly different than traditional public schools, though charter students who reported higher civics curricular and instructional exposure outperformed their peers at traditional public schools.
