Abstract

First-generation (FG) graduate students of color bring unacknowledged strengths into graduate school. These strengths can come from the skills, goals, or values of their families and communities, also known as funds of knowledge. This study drew on extant data to investigate how FG graduate students of color acquire, convert, and mobilize their funds of knowledge. Thirteen FG students (7 Latinx, 4 Multiethnic-racial, and 2 Asian American) participated in a semi-structured interview about their lived experiences in graduate school. The narratives were analyzed using a person-centered approach, and the findings revealed four different profiles that highlight the ways graduate students acquired and converted their funds of knowledge in academia.
