Zoom University: Transitioning to College in the Middle of a Pandemic

Sat, April 15, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The study analyzes interviews and surveys from 67 alumni from classes 2020 and 2021 from a college preparation program in California. These cohorts of students transitioned from high school to college over Zoom and other online platforms. We examine their college-going experiences with remote learning and related stressors within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings suggest that despite the preparation they received through their college preparation program, students struggled to feel like college students and to connect with others because of the pandemic. This research informs college preparation programs and colleges about ways to support students through crisis and virtual schooling.
