Synergizing to Support Underrepresented Groups in STEM: Student, Faculty, and Institutional Capacity-Building

Abstract

We examine perspectives from the Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) grant, funded by the National Institutes of Health to understand how simultaneous student-level, faculty-level, and institutional-level efforts worked together to shift institutional practices and policies toward enhancing diversity in biomedicine. Using linking systems as a theoretical framework, we expound upon how synergy is created with multi-level implementation of biomedical training interventions to advance an institution’s overall capacity. This study has implications for federal funding agencies, foundations, and higher education institutions who are interested in leveraging resources and efforts to build capacity to support equity in STEM education and career pathways.
