Black Liberatory Pedagogy: A Framework and Core Elements for Black Teachers Teaching Black Students

Abstract

Black Liberation is not new. Developing and delivering pedagogy and curricula in U.S. K-12 public schools that centers Black power as a tool for the collective liberation of Black students and Black people is. Building on insights generated from a review of the critical pedagogy and black liberation literature and supported by quantitative and qualitative evidence gathered via surveys and interviews with Black teachers; this paper presents a theoretical framework and core elements of a Black Liberatory Pedagogy (BLP) — one designed for Black teachers who teach in majority Black student school and classroom environments. The central elements of this framework are described and juxtaposed against pre-existing frameworks of culturally relevant, and culturally sustaining pedagogies.
