The Diversity Mosaic Experience: An Innovative University Approach to Initiate Diversity Conversations Using Video Narratives

Abstract

This phase of a larger mixed-methods investigation explored the impact of the Diversity Mosaic Experience (DME), an initiative for using video narratives at a university to promote dialogue about diversity and enhance cultural proficiency of faculty, staff, and students. Using a phenomenological approach, the research team engaged 10 institutional stakeholders to examine and reflect on the DME and its implications for practice and policy centered on issues of equity/inclusion. Analysis of in-depth interview data were compared to results from the larger study and the literature. Findings indicate DME increased commitment as a community to advocacy, personal/professional development, and creating a university-wide inclusive campus climate. This information will assist educators seeking more inclusive campuses through diversity initiatives and consequential research.
