Youth Empowerment: Revisiting the Critical Youth Empowerment Model in the Vietnamese Context

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic, along with other global crises, has increased existing inequities globally. It is critical that young people are empowered and prepared to become critically engaged citizens who can work towards equity and fairness. Youth empowerment is a topic that has received much attention from researchers in Western contexts. However, literature on this topic is limited in East Asian countries, where differences in social norms and cultural features could have a significant impact and implications for youth empowerment practices. Responding to the need to better support youth empowerment in Vietnam, we examine the affordances and constraints of adapting the Critical Youth Empowerment (CYE) model to Vietnamese youth development through the lens of Zimmerman’s (1995) Psychological Empowerment framework.
