Answer Our Calls: Needs and Service Encounters for Black Families Raising Autistic Children (Poster 25)

Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

Historic disparities in autism identification and access to services have persisted for Black autistic youth and their families. These disparities often result in delays in adequate service provision and have impacts on child outcomes related to behavior, socialization, and communication. The purpose of this quantitative content analysis was to explore the extent to which community-based disability organizations are supporting Black families of children with autism in North Carolina, to identify the demographics of the families served by the organizations, and to describe the types of services and supports requested by families.
