Professional Learning for Transformation? Educational Leaders and a New Teacher Evaluation System

Abstract

State education agencies have taken different approaches to offering professional learning supports for educational leaders. The present study focuses on The Nexus, one U.S. state’s professional learning support for school- and district-level educational leaders to learn how to implement a new teacher evaluation system. The purpose of the present study was to better understand the extent to which the Nexus, as a learning experience, (a) exhibited principles of adult learning and (b) fostered transformational learning in principals and principal supervisor participants. Leveraging a conceptual framework rooted in adult learning and transformational learning theories, this mixed-methods study found that while Nexus programming did prompt some participants to shift their self-conceptions and beliefs, there were fewer examples of actual shifts in actions.
