Building Community and Capacity: A Mixed-Methods Analysis of a Grow-Your-Own Teacher Residency Program

Abstract

Teacher residency programs have the potential to address two systems-level challenges: teacher shortages and novice educator training. Particularly in hard-to-staff locations, they can increase teacher diversity, effectiveness, and retention as well as ease the transition from coursework to the real world. Using Bank Street Education’s Prepared to Teach framework to guide analysis, this qualitative study examines the implementation of a Grow Your Own Residency in a small, rural district serving a predominately low-income, Latino/a community of approximately 4,000 students on the West Coast of the United States. The research team designed a concurrent mixed-methods study that collected both quantitative and qualitative data from multiple sources to understand the effects of engaging in a formal residency partnership.
