Connecting Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Citizenship: Mathematics Teacher Educators' Views and Ideologies

Fri, April 14, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Swissôtel Chicago, Floor: Lucerne Level, Alpine II

Abstract

This presentation shares an inductive analysis of survey responses from 90 mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) and semi-structured interviews with 20 MTEs that focuses on the conceptions held by MTEs related to the relationships across mathematics, mathematics education, and citizenship as they work with preservice teachers (PSTs). Findings suggest that even when focused on the same goal – in this case, strengthening mathematical understanding with PSTs – different mathematical education ideologies arise. Implications and recommendations for practice are shared related to the ways in which mathematics education ideologies manifest themselves in our instructional practices.
