Abstract

The advisor-advisee relationship is a critical
component to the overall experience of
graduate students (Bryson & Kowalski; 2021 Primé, Bernstein, Wilkins, & Bekki, 2015). The advisor selection process is a key component to successfully completing a doctoral degree. There is no universal way of selecting an advisor; this
process varies by disciplines, departments,
and institutions (Joy et al,2015). The advisor selection process and the advisor-advisee relationship can be extremely helpful with disparities and promote student persistence, degree completion, and retention in graduate
programs. Although most US graduate programs allow students to choose their advisors, little research has been conducted on understanding the impact the selection has on the advisor-advisee relationship overtime.
