Higher education leadership remains stratified with slow increases for people of Color. While most research on leadership diversity examines the experiences of current or former leaders, less is known about the prospective leaders of Color. Using the theory of possible selves, this study examines how newly-tenured faculty of Color (FOC) from three research-intensive universities in the Midwest envision their possible selves as leaders – or not. Along with empirically identifying the possible selves FOC want to achieve and those they want to avoid, the paper provides implications for organizations to create supportive organizational structures and environments to future leaders of Color success.
