Abstract

This study aims to explore the characteristics of a learning environment that can support the implementation of phenomenon-based learning in schools from the perspective of learning science and to consider how phenomenon-based learning can promote learning, based on the results of learning research. The study involved a case study of a Finnish comprehensive school. Several key findings emerged from this study. First, a phenomenon-based learning environment design rooted in learning science insights, from at least five main perspectives: learner-, concept-, assessment-, network- and technology-centred. Second, the learning science research outcomes affected the development of the school curriculum, thus highlighting the inclusion of the lessons necessary for the development of 21st-century competencies and the replacement of instructionism with active learning
