University Reparations: A Study of Institutional Engagement and the Role of Activism

Sun, April 16, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Missouri

Abstract

Many American universities are grappling with the idea of reparations, yet no known study has explored the various forms of higher education reparations being engaged by universities with enslavement histories. This study examines primary documents of universities engaging in reparations to better understand the various forms of reparations they are engaging in, and which types are the most and least common. Lastly, we explore if national racial justice activism contributes to the level of institutional engagement in their first year of establishing institutional amends.
