Rural Definition Triangulation: Improving the Credibility and Transferability of Rural Education Research in the United States

Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new tool for improving the credibility and transferability of rural education research in the United States: rural definition triangulation. We use two qualitative concepts (credibility and triangulation) and Tracy’s eight criteria for qualitative research to construct rural definition triangulation to further situate qualitative studies in the rural spaces where they occur. In this paper, we define rural definition triangulation and provide readers with several suggestions concerning its establishment for a variety of qualitative, mixed methods, and multimethod rural education research.
