Guiding Like the North Star: Black Teachers Helping Black Students Navigate Civic Estrangement

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Chicago Ballroom X

Abstract

This conceptual paper discusses the ways Black teachers help Black students navigate the contradictions of civic estrangement, which is the paradox that Black Americans experience simultaneously living as citizens and non-citizens. Findings indicate that Black teachers are straightforward with Black students about the intersection of race and citizenship, help Black students develop a critical consciousness, and use their experiences, along with the experiences of other students, as a teaching tool.
