Abstract

This research focused on language arts teachers’ perspectives on their practice in a Title 1 elementary school. Given the limited growth in standardized literacy scores in that school, the aim was to gain knowledge about educators’ strengths and areas of challenge. All language arts teachers (i.e., 10) in the high needs, inner city school were interviewed. The following themes evolved from the data: adherence to mandated planning guides, time limitations to integrate books/other activities, and limited professional agency. These areas are discussed in relation to implications for professional learning, including the need to enact professional agency.
