In this conceptual paper, I explicitly explore the need to create that some artist-researchers have, and the consequences of speaking this self-truth in the context of doing arts-based educational research, necessarily from my own racialized and classed position. I work to reconcile this with the premise that there is not a universal purpose in artmaking, while arguing that a wholeness comes with attending to the need to create that is largely worked around in the literature on ABER. I extrapolate this concept to how we view educational spaces: if there is a truth to the need to create for some within the ABER world, and a wholeness it brings, what implications come from viewing educational spaces as fundamentally creative spaces?
