Fri, April 14, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

The proposed paper examined NAEP 2006, 2010, and 2014 Grade 8 Civics results and the prevalence of civic opportunity gaps to address the correlation between student demographics, civic outcomes, curriculum and instructional exposure, and school type (e.g. traditional public, charter, and private), with specific attention given to Black and Hispanic students. We employed a multilevel regression model to ascertain the relationship between the aforementioned variables. Results indicated correlations between student demographics, civic outcomes, and exposure to civics related curriculum and instruction with Black and Hispanic students enrolled in charter and private schools outperforming their peers in tradiational public schools (TPS).
